KACC August Gallery Shows – Images, American Indian Artifacts of Texas

It’s one thing to browse a collection of ancient artifacts and admire the craftsmanship and ingenuity of past civilizations, and it’s something altogether different and far more enlightening to be introduced to such a collection by someone who has intensively studied the origins and uses of the artifacts by the long-gone people who made them.

KACC gallery visitors in August will have a chance to do both – browse an exhibit of artifacts from Texas Native American cultures and attend a gallery talk by the person who collected the artifacts and who is steeped in knowledge of their origins.

The exhibit, entitled American Indian Artifacts of Texas – With a Flair, is an astonishing collection of  over 300 different projectile points and knives, including tools, shoes, pipes, toys and more.  Dating from 12,000 BC to the 1700s, these Texas artifacts provide a wide-ranging perspective on the lives and cultures of Texas American Indians. The curator of this collection, Rick Sparkman, will present “Texas Artifacts 101”, an introduction to the exhibit in a gallery talk beginning at Noon on August 2 in the Derby Gallery. Both the talk and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
