Since its beginning in 2012, the Kerrville Outdoor Painters “Quick Draw” Competition, has taken place among the historical buildings and scenery of beautiful downtown Kerrville. In the “Quick Draw” competition, painters who have come to the Hill Country to paint for days among the spectacular hills, rivers and towns of our region come together on the evening before the big awards to see who has the fastest brush in the West. They have 90 minutes from start to finish to create their masterpieces, and these paintings are then auctioned off while still literally “wet” to the excited crowds who have come to watch the competition.
This year rather than fanning out among downtown streets and alleyways, the Plein Air “Quick Draw” competition on Wednesday, October 4th from 5:00-6:30 pm will be hosted by Kerrville’s renowned Riverside Nature Center, guaranteeing that their subject matter will be focused on the diversity of Hill Country nature itself, and ensuring that spectators will be able to stroll from one painter to another without having to trek all over downtown. Wine and food will be available for those attending. In addition to hosting the competition and sale, from 6:30 to 7:30 Riverside Nature Center will be putting on a gala reception for spectators and painters.
As many Kerrville residents already know, Riverside Nature Center, conveniently located at 150 Francisco Lemos Street, has plenty of parking and is also the trailhead for strolling the complex of trails that wind for miles along the Guadalupe River beneath centuries-old Cypress trees.
Beginning on the morning of Thursday October 5th the painters will head out to venues across the Hill Country, most of them scouted well in advance. Some venues will be in public places and some will be on private land – many of these never before seen by the public. Each of the painters will be followed by their fans, most of whom bring a picnic lunch and plan to spend the day watching their favorite artist’s creation emerge before their eyes. Friday October 6th will be much the same, with some of the artists completing more than one version of a single scene, and some changing location or perspective and creating multiple works of “Plein Art” art.
The artists will finish up their field work on Saturday morning the 7th, and at noon they will begin the process of turning in their finished work for judging, which will take place from Noon-2 pm. While the KACC galleries will be open during the normal 10 am – 4 pm hours on Saturday, at 4 pm the doors will close and the judges, the widely respected artists Julie Davis & Lee Ricks will begin their difficult task of determining the winning works. At the same time, in a frantic burst of energy, volunteers and the painters themselves will get all the work hung with award ribbons and labels attached and the refreshments set out. When the doors open again at 5 pm for the public reception, the awards ceremony, and Wet Paint Show & Sale, everything will be in place and ready for the crowds that typically descend on this immensely popular show. From 5-7 pm visitors will enjoy delicious refreshments and have the opportunity to view the freshly painted “Plein Air” artwork, visit with the artists, and if so inspired, purchase their favorite piece.
