Exploring Pastel

March 19 @ 9:00 am - March 21 @ 3:00 pm

Luce, Spring Mix

In this overview of working with pastels, you will learn about many techniques and materials for using pastels.  You will get to see and touch many of the surfaces available today and understand the difference between types of pastel.  This understanding of the materials is key to planning successful paintings.  There will be experimentation, demonstration and plenty of time for you to work under the guidance of the instructor.  This class is for beginner to intermediate pastel painters.

Bring several sheets of any surface designed for use with pastel and a set of 30 or more soft pastel (not oil pastel) colors in a medium hardness such as Rembrandt.  If you have more, please bring them.  You may wish to bring some photographs from which to work.  If you have questions, contact me at 830-928-5076.

$225 or $195 each if you bring a friend.

Instructor:  Debbie Minns

DEBBIE MINNS of Hunt, Texas, has recently retired from a career in non-profit arts administration to devote her time to her own art.  She has worked for prestigious community art organizations like Kerr Arts and Cultural Center, The Rockport Center for the Arts and Hill Country Arts Foundation.  While working she found time to create many works which have been selected for competitive regional shows and won numerous awards including several “Best in Show” honors.  Debbie says of her art, “My art is simply an exclamation of my love of nature.  I enjoy taking a small thing, whether it is an apple or a wildflower, and by painting it larger and bolder than life, draw attention to the beauty of that small object that might otherwise be overlooked.   By enlarging the subject, I create an abstraction by leaving parts off the page.  If my artwork has a ‘trademark’, it would be this unusual composition of placing the interest near the edges and corners.   Basically, my art is about sharing things I find beautiful and interesting.”  Her art ranges from large to small, pastel to mixed watermedia, and realistic to non-representational but will always feature high contrast, interesting compositions and bold, exciting color.
