2014 Texas Furniture Show Coming To KACC In Novembe

The Kerr Arts & Cultural Center
(KACC) is bringing the nationally-acclaimed 15th Annual Texas Furniture Makers Show to its spacious downtown Kerrville galleries October 30th through Saturday, November 29th, 2014. The Reception & Awards ceremony will be from 5:30-8:00 PM on Saturday, November 8th. The Reception and the Furniture Show are free and open to the public, and at the Reception many of the artists will be available to discuss techniques and materials.

This juried exhibition is a statewide competition featuring handcrafted pieces by the best custom furniture makers in Texas and is co-sponsored by Woodcraft, a national retail chain of specialty woodworking tools and equipment located in San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth.

The purpose of the Show is to present the work of Texas Furniture Makers to the public in a formal gallery atmosphere, to improve the quality and skill of Texas furniture making by formal consultation and by example, and to bring national attention to the one-of-a-kind handmade works of art created by Texas furniture makers.

The 2014 Furniture Show will include several special events including a Tool Show from Nov. 4th-8th, and a Seminar on Saturday Nov. 8th from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Tool Show will feature an exhibit of rare tools used by artists of the past to create the progressive furniture styles of their times. These tools of early furniture makers will be on display, representing a selection of what furniture makers in the 1700s and 1800s would have had available to them.

Early tools of other trades will also be on display and available for discussion during this same time period. These tools date from the 1600s to the early 1800s and will include tools of the coopers (or barrel makers) trade, carpenters, cabinet makers, timber framers, and other dominant trades of the time. There will also be tools of the Vikings and Romans, as well as the middle ages and even from the late Bronze Age.

Seminar participants on Saturday Nov. 8th will enjoy a presentation on designing beautiful boxes by guest speaker Doug Stowe. Doug will offer clear explanations of the principles and elements of design based on his 40 + years as a box maker and furniture designer. There will be a special emphasis paid to the hands, how they impact the creation of work, but also the shaping of intellect and character; as Doug says “we are what we make”.

This seminar is open primarily to Furniture Makers, but up to 20 seats will be available to the general public.  These reserved public spaces will go quickly, so those interested should register now.

Judges for the 2014 show are author, box-maker and seminar speaker Doug Stowe; J.R.Huebinger, President of Alamo Hardwoods; and Curtis Whittington, professional Furniture Maker for more than 25 years, Master Craftsman and former Texas Furniture Maker Show Judge.

Debbie Minns, KACC Executive Director notes “While the Furniture Show will be up for the entire month of November, many pieces sell early, even before the awards are announced, so we encourage anyone looking for that special piece of hand-crafted furniture for their home to visit KACC early and avoid being disappointed by seeing a red dot ‘already sold’ marker on the tag of the piece they fall in love with.”

Kerr Arts & Cultural Center, located at 228 Earl Garrett in downtown Kerrville, is open Tues – Sat 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. and Sun. 1-4 p.m. For more information on reservations for the Doug Stowe Seminar, or for information on all upcoming KACC events and workshops, call 830-895-2911 or visit www.kacckerrville.com and www.texasfurnituremakersshow.com.
